Martyrdom in this case is the act of self denial to please others. It’s not heroic.

No. I am not addressing what women find attractive or unattractive. That issue seems to be settled science. The Nice Guy problem effects all areas of his life, it’s a much bigger issue. What I am addressing is why in the face of reality Nice Guys cling to the identity (hint: it is their identity not an affectation of style).
Beyond that I agree whole heartedly with what you said.
